Did you know implant dentistry is the second-oldest dental profession in the world? Ancient peoples, as far back as in Mayan culture, used pieces of shells to replace missing teeth! They recognized the importance of a full and functional smile, just as we do today. Modern implant dentistry is much more advanced, of course, using amazingly strong titanium implants and durable restorations instead of shells. For years we have been using traditional dental implants—or titanium screws that we secure in the jawbone—to replace missing teeth.
These implants anchor restorations that mimic your natural teeth. Whether you need to replace one tooth with a crown, multiple teeth in a row with a bridge, or an entire arch of teeth with a denture, we have an implant solution for you! However, at Fine Dental Care, we go above and beyond “traditional!” While we may use traditional implants in some cases, we prefer mini dental implants as an alternative. The Drawbacks of Traditional Dental Implants
Traditional dental implants are around 5 millimeters in width and consist of many components held together by an implant screw. Unfortunately, these implants have many drawbacks, including:
Invasive procedure: To create a 5-millimeter hole, we first create an incision in your gums and peel them back. We then use a series of increasingly large drills to make the hole in your jawbone. Once we carefully screw the implant body in place, we stitch it up for a period of healing and wait for the implant to bond with your bone!
- Various components: Because a traditional implant has many components, we must place each at a separate appointment. Overall, it takes around three months to place each component and wait for the implant to fully stabilize in your bone. After it is stable enough, we will secure your final restoration to provide you with a beautiful and functional smile!
- Less accessible: Because of the implant’s large diameter, you need sufficient jawbone structure. Unfortunately, many patients requiring tooth replacement have less available bone structure because tooth loss leads to bone resorption! This loss of bone mass and volume makes many patients ineligible for traditional implants without a bone graft—a procedure that replenishes bone. Though effective, bone grafts add to both the procedure’s time and costs.
- More expensive: These implants are costly, as you have to pay for multiple appointments, various parts, and likely a bone graft!
The skilled and experienced dentists at Fine Dental Care believe you shouldn’t sacrifice so much comfort, time, and money to have the smile you deserve. Fortunately, we offer mini dental implants as an incredible alternative that is more comfortable, affordable, and quicker!
Implant Dentistry Innovations in Action With Mini Implants!
Mini dental implants are less than 3 millimeters in diameter and consist of only one solid piece of titanium. While the size difference may not seem important, consider the difference between the eraser at the end of a pencil (traditional implants) vs. a toothpick (mini implants). Due to their smaller diameter, mini implants require a much tinier hole in your jawbone!
Instead of creating an incision in your gums and drilling a large hole, we use a minimally invasive approach! With no incisions, we make a small pilot hole through the gums and into the jawbone to guide the implant. Not only is this a much more comfortable procedure, but it also preserves the surrounding gums and bone, facilitating incredibly fast healing!
Once we gently screw the implant in place, it is remarkably secure. With “immediate load potential,” mini implants can support a temporary restoration or—in some cases—final restoration the same day we place them! With mini implants, you don’t ever have to go without teeth!
In addition to a faster healing time and more comfortable procedure, these implants are also much more accessible! With a smaller diameter, we use much less of your bone structure. Those ineligible for traditional dental implants because of bone loss are often still eligible for mini implants—even without a bone graft! Mini implants are more accessible both to those with reduced jawbone density and patients on a budget. Due to their sleek one-piece design and fewer appointments, mini implants are about half the cost of traditional implants!
