Enamel is incredibly strong. In fact, it’s actually the hardest substance in the human body! But even so, it is possible to break your tooth. Whether it’s a sports accident or an unlucky mishap, your teeth aren’t immune to damage. If you have a broken tooth, you may be unsure about the next steps. Should you visit the emergency room? Do you see a dentist? Do you leave it alone? In Wayne, NJ, we recommend visiting an emergency dentist at Fine Dental Care! At our office, we provide same-day emergency care whenever possible. With prompt action and the right tools, we may be able to repair your tooth rather than extract it.
What To Do With a Broken Tooth
When you break a tooth, there are certain steps you should follow to give yourself the best chance at repair.
Immediately following the incident, rinse your mouth out with water. Then, if your mouth is bleeding, apply gentle pressure with a clean gauze for 10 to 15 minutes.- If you’re in pain or experiencing swelling, apply an ice pack to your cheek or lip where the tooth is, but never directly on the tooth.
- Collect any pieces of your tooth that you find. If they’re dirty, rinse the pieces off under water, but do not use soap!
- Hold the pieces of your tooth either in your mouth or in a bag filled with milk. Your saliva/the nutrients in milk help prevent the tooth from drying out, which is important for the repair process.
- Then, find an emergency dentist! Call ahead and ask if they have room for an emergency visit. If so, get there as soon as possible and bring any pieces of your tooth with you.
These steps are crucial to ensuring your tooth can be repaired. Even if your tooth is fully knocked out, we may be able to re-insert it if you act within the first hour after the accident.
However, it’s important to note that if you’re experiencing severe jaw pain, heavy or uncontrollable bleeding, or signs of a head injury, visit the Emergency Room first. After a medical professional checks you out, visit a dentist to repair or replace your tooth.
Repairing Your Broken Tooth
How we repair your tooth depends entirely on the extent of the damage.
In most cases, if you act quickly and bring all the pieces of your tooth to our office, we can repair it. This involves carefully putting the pieces of your tooth back together and securing them with dental bonding.
Take this real-life patient, for example! She followed our careful instructions and made a same-day emergency appointment with us at Fine Dental Care. Using all the pieces of her tooth, we restored her smile and put it back together. Now, her incredible smile looks as good as new, with no sign of damage!
If your tooth is more damaged, however, and the sensitive dental pulp inside the root canal is exposed, we may not be able to repair it. In that case, we will either place a dental crown on top or extract it and replace it with a dental implant!
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that looks like a natural tooth. But inside the cap is a hollow space that allows it to fit directly over your broken tooth. Crowns help cover damaged teeth to protect them from infection. But they also keep your smile functional so you can chew without worry!
In some cases, even a dental crown can’t save your tooth. If so, we will gently extract it to protect your smile. But don’t worry, your tooth won’t have to be missing for long! At Fine Dental Care, we use dental implants to replace missing teeth. And in many cases, we specifically use mini dental implants.
These titanium posts anchor in your jawbone, creating a strong foundation. Then, using the implant for support, we place an implant crown on top, replacing your tooth entirely!
