Instructions Following Scaling & Root Planing
Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning procedure performed to treat gum disease. This treatment helps to prevent the progression of gum disease and promotes better oral health.
- You may feel sensitivity to cold and heat for the first 24 hours.
- Avoid eating hot foods or drinking hot beverages until the numbness from anesthesia fades.
- Refrain from engaging in vigorous physical activities and eating hot or spicy foods for the first 24 hours.
- Do not consume alcoholic beverages or smoke for at least 48 hours after your treatment.
- Normal bleeding may occur following a deep cleaning; however, if the bleeding is excessive, please contact our office.
- Take ibuprofen or acetaminophen as needed, following the dosage instructions on the label or those provided by your doctor.
- To help with healing, rinse your mouth with warm salt water, about one teaspoon in an eight-ounce glass of water, three times a day.
- Brush and floss gently after your deep cleaning, and resume normal oral hygiene routines once the soreness subsides.
- Follow any additional instructions provided by our office during your visit.
- Take all prescribed medications as directed.
