Pediatric dentistry specializes in providing dental care for children and focuses on creating a positive experience for children in a dental setting. In addition to teaching lifelong dental habits for a healthy smile, early dental care is important to take care of your child’s teeth because they aid in speech development, assist with eating and digestion, and help maintain space for permanent teeth.
Comprehensive Oral Evaluation / Digital Radiographs
An oral evaluation is recommended every six (6) months to prevent cavities and other dental problems. Digital imagery is a valuable diagnostic tool used to identify decay, extra teeth, bone defects, tumors, cysts and check the progress of previous procedures.
Regular cleanings help keep gums healthy and teeth cavity-free. A dental cleaning includes removal of tartar and plaque and polishing of the teeth to remove stains and prevent further buildup of plaque. Plaque is bacteria that causes cavities and gum disease.
Due to braces accumulating large amounts of plaque, we recommend cleanings every three months for the duration of your orthodontic treatment. Braces increase the risk of cavities, white spots on the teeth, and other damage.
Dental sealants are made of a safe resin material which is applied to the surfaces of teeth (commonly permanent molars) to prevent cavities. The sealant material fills in the crevices of a tooth and “seals” off the tooth from cavity-causing agents like food and plaque. The teeth are prepared for the sealant application and the sealant is painted directly onto the chewing surface of each tooth and then hardens. Sealants are applied in one visit.
Fluoride is a natural substance that helps strengthen teeth and prevent decay. Fluoride treatments are administered at this office as an important component of pediatric dental treatment. The fluoride is applied to the teeth in a gel, foam, or varnish form.
Poly-Vi-Flor is a prescription multivitamin that incorporates fluoride for those who do not receive adequate fluoride through drinking water. Most who have taken Poly-Vi-Flor from infancy through puberty have not gotten cavities, while those who have not taken Poly-Vi-Flor are more likely to have cavities and tooth loss. Fluoride is an amazing mineral that strengthens our enamel to prevent cavities. This was discovered many many years ago when people in parts of the country did not get cavities like everyone else did. it was discovered that the natural water they drank contained fluoride, contributing to their excellent dental health.
Invisalign® takes a modern approach to straightening teeth, using a custom-made series of aligners. These aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable, and virtually invisible plastic that are worn over the teeth. Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift the teeth into place, based on the exact tooth movements our office plans out for you. There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten. Treatment involves switching to a new set of aligners approximately every week, until treatment is complete. Your child will achieve a great smile with little interference in your daily life. The best part about the whole process is that most people won’t even know that they’re straightening their teeth.
Custom-fitted mouth guards from your dentist are more protective than cheaper products available from a store. Many school athletic programs require participants to wear a mouth guard. Athletes who are wearing braces will particularly benefit from a custom-fitted mouthguard.
