How Is a Tooth Extraction and Implant Placement the Same Day Possible?
In many cases, patients need to wait weeks for their dental extraction to heal before considering replacement options. This is especially true for those who need a surgical extraction, which involves making an incision in the gums. After your gum and bone tissue have healed, we can then place a dental implant to replace your missing tooth.
However, at Fine Dental Care, we understand that not everyone has the time to wait for a replacement tooth. Whether your daughter’s wedding is next week or you’ve got a job interview in a few days, you don’t want to leave that gap exposed!

However, it’s important to note that not everyone is eligible for same day tooth extraction and implant placement. Patients without enough bone to support mini implants will require a 2-month healing period. Once their bone heals, we’ll secure the implant in place.

The Same Day Tooth Extraction and Implant Process
If you’re eligible for same day tooth extraction and implant placement, we’ll create a custom treatment plan for your smile. This involves discussing your goals, taking impressions of your smile, and scheduling your placement appointment.
At your appointment, we’ll begin by using a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. Then, we’ll either perform a simple or surgical extraction, depending on the state of your tooth.
- Simple extraction: When your tooth is easily accessible, we carefully loosen it in its socket and then gently remove it with special dental tools. This process preserves much of your bone structure, allowing for more rapid healing.
- Surgical extraction: If your tooth is difficult to reach or partially underneath the gums, we’ll need to use a more surgical approach. We start by creating an incision in your gums to expose your tooth. Then, we may need to break it into smaller sections and remove it piece by piece.
Afterwards, we’ll create a small pilot hole in your jawbone. Then, we’ll place your mini dental implant inside the hole, carefully screwing it into your jaw. Often, we place these implants with bone grafting material, replacing your tooth and rebuilding the bone around your implant simultaneously.
After a few weeks of healing, your implant should be secure enough in your jaw to support a final crown restoration!
Recovery After a Same Day Tooth Extraction and Implant
Recovering from an extraction and implant placement requires thoughtful care.
Due to their minimally invasive procedure, mini implants have a relatively comfortable healing process. However, adding an extraction to the mix (especially a surgical one) may complicate your recovery.
After an extraction and implant placement, you’ll need to follow the healing instructions for both procedures. This involves taking over-the-counter pain medications to manage post-operative discomfort, while also using an ice pack to help with any pain or swelling from the extraction.
Additionally, we encourage patients to stick to soft foods and avoid any hard, sticky, and hot meals. While chewing, be sure to avoid the side with your implant, using the other side of your mouth as much as possible.
Just like after a normal extraction, we recommend avoiding straws, which disturb your healing process. Instead, take careful sips and keep your head elevated to prevent blood from rushing to your mouth.
Within just a few weeks after your extraction and implant placement, your mouth should feel much better. Once we secure your final crown, you can smile confidently and enjoy your brand-new smile for years to come!
