4 Myths About Dental Implants

Dental implants are an effective and long-lasting solution for patients who want to replace their missing or severely broken teeth. Consisting of a small metal rod combined with a crown designed to look like a real tooth, there are many great benefits why patients consider dental implant treatment.

However, despite their growing popularity, there are also many myths still out there that keep dental patients from getting dental implant treatment. On the fence about dental implants and aren’t quite sure what’s true or not? We here at Fine Dental Care are happy to dispel the myths and explain why you should consider getting dental implants:

Myth #1: Dental implants don’t last long

Some people believe that dental implants don’t last as long as other dental treatments. The truth is that with proper oral hygiene maintenance, dental implants last even longer than your average restorative treatment like dental crowns or bridges. With good oral hygiene, your dental implants can last 30 years or more, and in many cases the rest of the patient’s life.

Myth #2: Dental implants hurt a lot

While it is true that dental implant surgery is more invasive than other dental treatments, the actual treatment itself shouldn’t be painful at all. As a minimum, local anesthesia is used to numb the patient’s mouth during treatment. This anesthesia usually wears off after just a few hours so that, for patients with a morning appointment, they can go back to work and be productive once more in the afternoon.

However, you should be aware that dental implant recovery time does take longer compared to other dental treatments. Make sure you follow your dentist’s recovery instructions, along with any medication they prescribe to you to avoid pain and ensure successful implant bonding.

Myth #3: Dental implants aren’t effective

Dental implant treatment is both a cosmetic and restorative dental solution. Dental implants replace missing teeth with a crowndesigned to not only look like but function just like your natural teeth. With dental implants, you can restore your proper smile and enjoy the benefits of having a full set of teeth again.

the overall effectiveness of your dental implants is still determined by your oral hygiene habits and your regular 3 month hygiene visits. While implants cannot experience cavities, bad oral hygiene does lead to gum disease, which in turn destroys the bone around the implant and can cause your implants to fall out. Make sure you practice these oral hygiene habits to maximize the effectiveness of your dental implant treatment:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice daily
  • Floss at least once daily most importantly before bedtime
  • Eat a nutritious and balanced diet
  • Use a Waterpik at least once daily
  • Avoid smoking, vaping, and other carcinogens as much as possible

Myth #4: Dental implants are extremely expensive

While dental implants are more costly than dental crowns and bridges upfront, the overall cost for treatment isn’t as expensive in the long run. Due to how long they last, dental implant treatment leads to less dental treatments over the course of your life. As a result, you save both time and money through dental implant treatment.

Some dental insurance packages also cover some of the costs associated with dental implant treatment. Contact your dental insurance provider and your dental office to find out if parts of your treatment may be covered!
