Frequently asked questions

What does a dentist consider to be an emergency?

Generally speaking, a dental emergency refers to any problem that needs immediate treatment. This may be to stop bleeding, alleviate severe dental or oral pain, treat infection, or save a damaged tooth. If it can’t wait for a regularly scheduled visit, it’s an emergency and Fine Dental Care is here to help.

What are the most common dental emergencies?

Dental injuries, infections, and emergencies are more common than you might think. Dr. Fine treats a wide range of common emergencies, such as tooth pain or sensitivity, a cracked or chipped tooth, or knocked-out tooth, an oral injury, persistent pain, redness or swelling in your mouth, a broken restoration (such as a crown, bridge or dentures), or suspected abscessed tooth.

Can you see me now for a same-day emergency appointment?

We offer same-day emergency appointments and treatments to address urgent needs as promptly as possible. Walk-ins are also welcome as scheduling permits. For existing patients, our dentists are also available at all times, even after regular normal business hours and on weekends. Please call our office and select the emergency option, when prompted by the automatic message.

Can the ER help with a tooth?

Emergency rooms are set up to help people experiencing medical emergencies. Unfortunately, while your first instinct is to go to the hospital, they are not designed to handle dental injuries or infections. Unless you’re experiencing uncontrolled bleeding or swelling, you should contact Fine Dental Care immediately. Dr. Fine and his team have the state-of-the-art equipment, training, and facilities needed to treat your condition and provide relief.

Do you offer financing?

Yes, we do! Our office offers interest-free financing through LendingTree and CareCredit for a flexible payment plan that fits your budget needs.

Do over-the-counter teeth whitening treatments work?

Yes many of today’s over-the-counter and store-bought whitening treatments offer some degree of brightening. However, they contain weaker bleaching gels than the kinds of options available at your dentist’s office. They are not formulated to the same strength as professional in-office whitening treatments. This means that over-the-counter and at-home whitening solutions take many uses over days or weeks to provide visible results. For fast, reliable, and long-lasting results, book a professional teeth whitening session with Dr. Fine.

Is teeth whitening safe?

Yes, professional teeth whitening is a safe and reliable procedure. The peroxide-based bleaching gels our office uses are specifically formulated by dental care experts with chemically activated ingredients. Our dentists are also trained in cosmetic dentistry in order to safely and effectively apply the whitening gels without causing any unnecessary discomfort in your sensitive teeth and gums.

Does teeth whitening hurt?

Generally speaking, having your teeth whitened is a very safe and comfortable procedure. Millions of people get their teeth whitened every year due to the ease and effectiveness of the procedure. That said, it’s normal for patients to experience some temporary sensitivity in their teeth during or after a whitening treatment session. However, Dr. Fine takes every precaution to minimize sensitivity so you can enjoy your dazzling smile without any unwanted discomfort.

Are veneers permanent?

Veneers are a permanent cosmetic procedure. They need a thin layer of enamel to be removed from your teeth prior to placement and are bonded to the remaining tooth structure. For this reason, only a trained dental professional can make repairs or adjustments to your veneers.

How long do veneers last?

The lifespan of your veneer depends on the type you choose, and your veneers will eventually need to be repaired or replaced just like any other dental work. Composite resin veneers typically last 5-7 years while porcelain veneers will last 10-15 years. Lumineers have a similar lifespan to porcelain veneers with good at-home care and regular cleanings.

Do veneers hurt?

Lumineers and composite veneers are the most pain-free way to receive veneers as they require little to no tooth preparation. While porcelain veneers do require some tooth preparation, they are very comfortable to have bonded to your teeth. Dr. Fine will take every precaution during your veneer preparation and administer local anesthetic as needed to ensure your comfort.

Do you offer financing?

Yes, we do! Our office offers interest-free financing through LendingTree and CareCredit for a flexible payment plan that fits your budget needs.

How long does it take to get veneers?

On average, patients can expect the process of getting porcelain veneers to take 3-4 weeks. You will visit our office 2-3 times during this time, from your initial consultation to the final fitting and application. Composite veneers are sculpted directly onto the surfaces of your teeth rather than being created in a lab and bonded to the surfaces of your teeth. Lumineers can typically be placed in 1-2 visits because they require virtually no tooth preparation.

What kind of veneers can I get?

Choose between custom porcelain, chairside composite, and “no-prep” veneers (Lumineers). These cosmetic restorations allow us to dramatically transform your smile’s entire appearance.

What happens if I don’t get an implant?

Missing teeth make it difficult to properly eat your food, leading to digestive problems and nutritional deficiencies. After you lose a tooth, your jaw will also begin to shrink, which will cause your facial muscles to sag.

Do you offer sedation?

Yes, our team offers laughing gas sedation to patients undergoing tooth extractions or implant surgery to ensure they enjoy a relaxed and painless experience.

What are implants made out of?

Dental implants are made from titanium. This type of metal is strong, long-lasting, and biocompatible, meaning that it fuses with the surrounding bone tissue in your jaw. Once placed, the implants will be absorbed by your jawbone to provide a stable foundation for your implant-supported dentures.

How many appointments will it take to get implants?

You will visit our office 2-3 times during your dental implant treatment experience. The full process includes your initial consultation, treatment planning, surgery, and follow-ups to check on your progress.

Do implants hurt?

Getting an implant involves a simple, surgical procedure guided by advanced computer-assisted placement tools. During your procedure, Dr. Fine will insert the implants into your jawbone. Be sure to follow the post-operative care instructions we provide you with to ensure a swift and comfortable recovery while your jawbone heals.

Why should I straighten my teeth?

Straightening your smile can complement your appearance, but more importantly, it improves your oral health. Guiding your teeth into a straighter, healthier alignment can improve your bite, reduce the risk of gum disease and tooth decay, and can reduce the stress on your jaw joints.

Who is a candidate for Invisalign?

Book a consultation with Dr. Fine to discuss your case and all treatment options. Only a trained dental professional with experience in Invisalign can determine if clear aligners are right for your smile. For more involved cases, Dr. Fine will refer patients to an excellent local orthodontist whom he has known for years. The services provided there are truly outstanding and more catered to conditions that would require traditional braces or more extensive treatment.

How do invisible braces work?

Invisalign is an incredible method to straighten your teeth. It uses aligners that are virtually invisible instead of metal brackets and wires. Special plastic trays are specifically made to fit over your teeth. About every two weeks, new aligning trays will be worn to gently shift your teeth into the correct position. This system is not only more comfortable than braces, but it is also convenient and more conducive to your lifestyle. Take them out to enjoy your favorite foods, and when you brush or floss!

How long does Invisalign take?

Depending on the complexity of your case and unique treatment needs, you could complete your Invisalign treatment in as little as 6-12 months. Many patients will finish treatment and enjoy a straighter smile within 12-24 months. Dr. Fine will provide you with a complete breakdown of your treatment and what to expect during your consultation.

How often should I have my teeth cleaned?

The American Dental Association recommends having your teeth cleaned twice yearly (or every six months) to achieve and maintain optimal oral health and wellness.

Are cleanings covered by insurance?

For most insured dental patients, the answer is yes. Basic preventive care, such as checkups and cleanings, is covered up to 100%. In-depth periodontal cleanings (also called “deep cleanings”’) may be covered in part from 50% to 80%, depending on your insurance plan. Our team will be sure to confirm your benefits and help you understand your coverage to make the most of the benefits you’re owed.

When should I start bringing my child to the dentist?

It’s recommended that you begin bringing your child to the dentist by their first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth coming in. However, we believe that until children are ready, it’s best not to force their first appointment on them! The key to that is getting them to feel comfortable in our office before they have their first checkup. We can make their first experience positive, making all the difference for them later on!

How often should I see the dentist?

We recommend bi-annual check-ups for most healthy patients. If you have a history of dental problems, we may recommend more frequent visits until your smile’s health is restored back to its optimal levels.

Do dental cleanings hurt?

Dental cleanings should never cause you discomfort or pain. Our dental hygienists are trained to perform gentle yet thorough cleanings. Patients living with tooth decay, inflamed gums, and other dental issues may experience increased sensitivity during their cleaning. However, our team is dedicated to your comfort and well-being at all times and will work to make your experience as painless as possible.
