Most of us know about the grinding teeth phenomenon. Bruxism, for those of us who did not know, is the grinding, gnashing or clenching of teeth. Some of us do this involuntarily, without realizing it. Some people do so while sleeping. This is called sleep bruxism.
It is important that one realizes that bruxism does not have a cure to its name. Nonetheless, there are ways for its prevention. Teeth grinding can result in crooked teeth or biting your tongue, even. Bruxism is known to be a common condition. It is said that up to one in three people may be suffering from it.
As per records, fifteen percent of kids are said to be suffering from the malaise of teeth grinding. However, this number can dip to three per cent when one reaches senior citizens age group. In rare circumstances, Bruxism can result due to certain other complications. These can be after effects of certain medications like anti-anxiety pills.
The effects of Bruxism can hinge between mild to serious issues. The real time issue involved in Bruxism is the overall effect that it can cause. One day or a few days of teeth grinding will have no side effects. However, teeth gnashing and grinding for a long period will certainly result in the teeth wearing down.
The side effects of Bruxism include loosening of the teeth; loss of teeth; fracturing or cracking of the teeth; the tooth or teeth enamel gradually wears off; the gum line starts receding; pain the jaws; pain in the tooth or teeth region; jaw joint disorders can occur.
As per a study, the tooth enamel gets eroded by just about 0.3 millimeters every ten years or so. However, a Bruxer can have his or her teeth enamel gets eroded by 0.2 millimeters in two to three years.
Since teeth grinding can occur while sleeping, there are certain sleep disorders too which can get aggravated or are linked up in some which way with this condition. One such condition is sleep apnea. This is a chronic condition in which a person’s sleep gets disturbed due to breaks in one’s breathing. These breaks can even last for as long as 60 seconds. Following this, comes a choking sensation. As per studies were done in this segment, there is a good chance of Bruxism happening with those who are afflicted with sleep apnea.
The jaw muscles, when one clenches or grinds teeth, get stressed out. People are known to develop headaches even when they clench or grind teeth for a long time. Clenching is linked up with stress. However, it can get worse if a person is prone to chewing on gum, pencils or pens. Thus, Bruxers are asked to avoid chewing on anything other than the food they intake.
