How Professional Teeth Cleanings Fight Gum Disease

There are many people walking around out there who haven’t had their teeth professionally cleaned in years. Going without a professional teeth cleaning might not seem like that big of a deal to some, but unfortunately for those who haven’t made it a priority, these cleanings are the only way to get rid of plaque and calculus buildup. To make matters worse, plaque and calculus buildup are serious causes of gum disease. “A professional cleaning administered by a dental professional at least twice a year can keep plaque and calculus from destroying our teeth and gums,” informs Dr. Bruce Fine of Fine Dental Care in Wayne.

How Plaque Accumulates
Plaque is made up of invisible masses of harmful germs that stick to teeth, which over time cause tooth decay and gum disease. Calculus (or tartar, as we know it) is a type of hardened dental plaque created by the accumulation of minerals from saliva on top of the plaque on our teeth. The plaque’s rough surface creates an ideal staging area for further plaque formation which threatens the health of our gums.

Preventing Tooth Decay Through Home Care and Professional Visits
Good flossing and brushing habits usually remove the plaque from which calculus forms, but once formed, it’s too hard and firmly attached to the teeth to be removed with a toothbrush or floss. Regular professional cleanings remove plaque and calculus above and just below the gum line, combating gum disease and keeping our teeth healthy. Further, for those of us prone to gingivitis or who’ve had extensive dental work done, it may take three to four cleanings a year to help prevent gum disease.

A dental exam will help your dental professional determine the right cleaning schedule for your specific needs. “All mouths are different,” says Dr. Fine, “But one thing is for sure, everyone of us needs our teeth cleaned twice a year to keep our gums healthy.”
