Since there is no fluoride added to our local drinking water, children under the age of sixteen should receive fluoride supplements to help prevent cavities and gum disease. “Iʼve seen the dramatic differences in my own practice, between those children and adults whoʼve used fluoride and those who havenʼt,” says Dr. Bruce Fine, of Fine Dental Care in Wayne. “Those whoʼve had fluoride supplements have essentially no cavities or fillings in their mouths, while those whoʼve had no fluoride tend to get cavities during childhood and throughout their lives.”

Less Cavities
In the early to mid twentieth century, it was found that people living in areas with moderate amounts of fluoride in the water were getting less cavities and keeping their teeth. In contrast, people living in areas with little or no fluoride in the water were having significant amounts of cavities and losing their teeth by middle age.

The American Dental Association states, “Research has shown that fluoride not only reduces cavities in children and adults, it also helps repair the early stages of tooth decay even before decay is visible.” Since the only way to get the proper fluoride supplements is by “Prescription only,” Dr. Fine recommends seeing your dentist or pediatrician to properly evaluate, advise and prescribe the ideal amount of fluoride your child will need to prevent future dental problems.
