There are several issues which have been brought up to teeth whitening treatments. First and foremost, teeth whitening may result in tooth sensitivity and gum tissue irritation. Also, there are several other factors like tooth surface roughening and softening which enhances the risk of demineralization.

How can teeth whitening be done?

This can be done in the dental clinic as well as at home. The at-home treatment involves the use of whitening trays. These are manufactured in the dental laboratory after taking an impression of the teeth and gums. The trays are smeared with whitening gel and worn over the teeth and gums for a given number of hours each day and a given number of days. The teeth start to whiten slowly but surely. However, this process is not permanent. The whitened teeth can become yellowed or stained with time if they are not cared for properly. Thus it is a must to brush teeth on a daily basis at least twice in a day and for at least two minutes each time. Also, the tooth brush used for this purpose should be changed at least once every two months, and a good quality tooth paste is used. Also, one should go in for dental flossing at least once in a day and with the use of proper technique. Also, the whitened teeth should be shown to the dentist on a regular basis for any other treatment or work required. Teeth whitening can also be done with the use of whitening toothpaste or whitening gums. This process, too, is temporary.

How is whitening done in the dental clinic?

Whitening is done in the dental clinic first by prepping up the teeth. Then, an activating gel is smeared onto them. A laser beam, at a given wavelength and frequency, is passed over the teeth and for a given duration of time. The gel gets cured or glued onto the teeth and whitens them by several degrees or shades. This procedure may be repeated once more for more effective results. However, this too is temporary and needs to be aided and abetted by following good oral hygiene rules and regulations. Also, one should take care of the dietary intake. One should not eat food items like beetroots which can cause the teeth to get re-stained. Also, to prevent re-staining, one should immediately brush the teeth after consuming such food items. If brushing them is not possible, at least one should go in for a thorough rinsing of the mouth area. Also, one should not drink too much of black tea, coffee, red wine et al. This too will cause the teeth to get re-stained. Hence, one should wash the mouth soon after consuming such items. Smoking and intake of nicotine-related products will have the same negative results. It is best to kick such habits by going in for counseling or following other precautions and means.
