The formula is: Gross income &#8211; Adjustments = AGI.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Once you&#8217;ve done those calculations, you&#8217;ll need to figure out what 7.5 percent of your AGI is. <\/strong>This is the minimum threshold for the deduction. As an example, let&#8217;s say a patient has an AGI of $55,000. 7.5% of their AGI is $4,125, which is their minimum threshold for deduction. If their qualifying dental expenses exceed the minimum threshold, they could deduct their treatment costs. However, these qualifying dental expenses generally can&#8217;t include what insurance covered or what you paid with tax-free <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcare.gov\/glossary\/health-savings-account-hsa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health Savings Account (HSA)<\/a><\/strong> distributions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Finally, you&#8217;ll need to determine your deduction<\/strong>. Using the same example from before, our patient has a minimum deduction threshold of $4,125. If their implant costs (minus any expenses covered by insurance or an HSA) are $20,000, they would subtract $4,125 from $20,000.
